Designed by the legendary Geoff Crammond, Microprose's 1991 classic World Circuit (alternately known as F1GP) marked the first mass-market attempt at producing a realistic auto racing simulation. How much the world has changed since then! In eagerly-awaited development for over three years, Grand Prix 2 finally hit store shelves in July 1996 and upped the ante in simulation standards, incorporating unprecedented features like auto shading with variable sun angles, 100% fully detailed cars and helmets, saving games in progress without losing important mid-race data, and SVGA graphics so overwhelming the sim cannot be run with all detail levels turned on, even on the fastest contemporary PC's.
Based on the 1994 Formula 1 season, with all correct drivers, teams, and non-tobacco sponsors incorporated, Microprose (perhaps due in part to the standard FIA licensing agreement) provided no way for users to modify car and helmet paint schemes. That is, until third-party programmers made these modifications possible.
Now, you can add the cars of Rover, Hexagon, and Max into the 1996 Formula 1 car set of your choice. Join the Penske or DMC team and run for the World Championship - or languish at the back of the grid with Larrousse. The ZIP file contains the necessary BMP files for this customization (updated Nov. 8).
The numerous conversion programs and other utilities required for modifying GP2 to 1996 season specifications can be found at Peiter's GrandPrix Homepage.
